It could seem that the case of the brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi came to naught. Today less media remember this story. But not in Ankara. According to Reuters, citing foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkey plans to launch an international investigation of this bloody case and will take further steps in this direction in the coming days.

“There are Western countries trying to cover this case up. I know the reasons. We know and see what sorts of deals are made. We see how those who spoke of freedom of press are now covering this up after seeing money,” Cavusoglu said. “We, however, will go until the end. We made preparations for an international investigation in the coming days and we will take the necessary steps.”

We can assume that US asked Turkey not to build up this case. However Ankara continue to use the ‘Khashoggi’ as a lever of pressure on Washington. You could notice that right after US president Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from Syria, the rumors in mass media about Khashoggi case went down. Neither politicians nor diplomats mentioned this topic. Today, when US government begins to weasel out after a number of US citizens became a victims of terrorist attack in Syria, Turks have remembered the Khashoggi again. It’s a some kind of measuring of progress in talks on Syrian Kurds between US an Turkey. This issue is especially noteworthy.

The continuing tensions between Ankara and Washington over the Kurds in Syria have already thrown into question the obligations of these NATO allies.Turkey’s president sees the YPG and PKK as a single terrorist force that represents an existential threat to the Turkish state. The United States, on the contrary, consider them as an ally force in Syria. Ally, till that time while US feels the need.

Another fact that Turkey wants to buy Russian S-400 air defence system instead of US’ Patriots tells that Erdogan is ready to act independently in the Middle East and doesn’t afraid of any sanctions from Western state.

Having regard to all these issues we can assuredly say that this time US have repeatedly got a slap in the face from Turkey. And it’s apart of Washington’s behavior. The world history shows that if US can’t make a deal with country’s leadership they try to find more amenable one. Who knows, may be US intelligence has already prepared a new ‘Fethullah Gülen’ for today’s military coup in Turkey.
