US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) lost seved fighters to a surprise terror attack at a checkpoint in the city of Manbij in northern Aleppo province.
“A terrorist attack was staged on one of the checkpoints inside the city of Manbij at midnight and as a result seven fighters on guard duty were martyred,” the SDF-linked Manbij Military Council said in a statement.
Security forces were put on high alert in the city in an attempt to catch the perpetrators. It is suspected that the attack was carried out by an Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cell.
The attack came a few days adter the SDF declared the defeat of ISIS in Baghuz village, the last hold-out of the terror group in eastern Syria. Although ISIS has no settlements left under its control, an unknown number of terrorists managed to flee to the desert areas and the neighboring Iraq and Turkey.
