Elite Iraqi forces backed by US-led coalition artillery and air strikes have captured six districts of Mosul from ISIS – and raised the nation’s flag above the city for the first time in two years.

Counter terror forces took over the neighbourhoods of Malayeen, Samah, Khadra, Karkukli, Quds and Karama as they battle jihadists defending the city where their ‘new caliphate’ was born.

They then raised the Iraqi flag over buildings in those areas, and inflicted heavy losses on ISIS.

However, during the US-led coalition air strikes dozens of civilians were killed and hundreds wounded, the precise number is still being clarified.
