The possibility of People’s Protection Units (YPG) withdrawal from the city of Tel Rifaat in Northern Aleppo has become a topic of discussion on the negotiations between Russia and Turkey, says a source in the Syrian opposition.
According to a military commander Mustafa Sijri, Moscow and Ankara are currently looking into the possibility of returning the city under the control of the Free Syrian Army (FSA). He added that the final decision on this issue has not been made yet.
Sijri’s claim was preceded by similar statements from other military commanders, including the leader of Hamza Division Saif Aby Bakr and the representative of the General Staff of the so-called Interim Syrian Government Haytham al-Afisi.
Tel Rifaat was captured by YPG in early 2016 after a successful offensive against the armed opposition groups. It is situated close to the city of Afrin, which is the center of the eponymous Kurdish enclave in Aleppo province.
