Dozens of troops were airlifted by Apache planes and dropped in an eastern suburb of Deir Ezzor close to an ISIS weapons store and a military supply point, Sky News reported on Monday (April 17) citing local sources.
Following the landing operation which took 20 minutes, ISIS reportedly deployed reinforcements to the fields of Quinco, Jafra and Tenk, and erected flying checkpoints in the city of Mayadeen, Shuayatat, Bu Kamal and its surroundings.
Deir Ezzor is an oil-rich province which borders Iraq. Half of the city is under ISIS control while the other part is held by Syrian government forces. The province has been the focus of U.S.-led Coalition airstrikes.
